A cash flow statement template organizes cash inflows and outflows over a reporting period. It helps explain how the opening cash balance changed to the closing balance.
Choose a historical statement for reporting or a forecast for planning. Keep operating, investing, and financing categories distinct where the reporting format requires them.

How to use the cash flow statement template
Step 1. Start with the correct opening cash balance. Compare operating performance using profit and loss templates.
Step 2. Classify movements using consistent records and avoid counting transfers within the same reported cash pool twice. Review the closing financial position with balance sheet formats.
Step 3. Reconcile net cash movement to the closing balance and investigate differences.
A forecast should show expected receipt and payment dates, not only monthly totals. Money expected late in a month cannot pay a bill due at the beginning unless other cash is available. Review customer payment assumptions and the timing of payroll, tax, and supplier commitments.
For a historical statement, use the required reporting method consistently. An indirect operating cash flow calculation begins with a profit figure and adjusts for specified differences; a direct cash listing uses receipts and payments. Do not mix the two approaches without understanding the reconciliation.
Example and checks
Opening cash of 10,000 plus receipts of 6,000 less payments of 4,500 gives closing cash of 11,500.
Revenue recorded on credit is not necessarily cash received. Do not copy income-statement totals into a cash report without adjusting for timing. See the connected reports in financial statement templates.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cash forecast the same as a cash flow statement?
A forecast estimates future movements; a historical statement reports a completed period.
Can a profitable business run short of cash?
Yes. Customer payment delays and other cash commitments can create a shortage.
